Trump Unveils “Trump-Class” Battleships

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced plans for a new generation of U.S. Navy warships while publicly pressuring defense contractors to rein in rising costs and delivery delays.

Speaking at the White House alongside Pentagon officials, Trump introduced what he called “Trump-class” battleships, describing them as heavily armed, technologically advanced vessels intended to modernize the fleet and project U.S. power globally. The announcement comes amid growing concerns over shipbuilding overruns and strained naval readiness.

“These ships will be the strongest and most advanced the world has ever seen,” Trump said. “But we are not going to tolerate massive cost overruns anymore.”

According to defense officials, the program would prioritize missile defense, cyber resilience and long-range strike capabilities. The Navy has not released final specifications or timelines, but early estimates suggest the first contracts could be awarded in 2026.

Trump also issued a blunt warning to major defense contractors, saying the administration would use fixed-price contracts and penalties to control spending. “If you can’t deliver on time and on budget, you won’t get the job,” he said.

Industry representatives reacted cautiously. One senior executive, speaking on background, said companies were “open to accountability” but warned that supply-chain constraints and workforce shortages continue to drive costs.

The proposal is expected to face scrutiny from Congress, where lawmakers will weigh the price tag against other defense and domestic priorities. Hearings are likely early next year as budget negotiations begin.
